Print Specifications
UK passport photos must be printed at the correct size and quality. Here are the requirements:
- Photo size: 35×45 mm
- Resolution: 300 DPI minimum
- Paper: Glossy or matte photo paper
- Background: Plain white, light grey, or cream
- Colour: Full colour, no black and white
- Print quality: Sharp, no pixelation or banding
Tip: Kindro’s 4×6 print layout includes multiple 35×45 mm photos with cut guides. Just print this as a standard 4×6 photo and cut along the lines.
Option 1: Boots Photo (Recommended)
Boots is the most convenient option for most people in the UK. Nearly every high street Boots has a self-service photo kiosk, and many larger stores have staffed photo counters.
- Create your photo on Kindro’s free tool
- Download the 4×6 print layout to your phone
- Use the Boots self-service kiosk — transfer via Bluetooth, USB, or the Boots Photo app
- Select “4×6 glossy photo” — no cropping
- Cost: ~15p for a single 4×6 print
- Cut along the guides to get your passport photos
Important: Tell the kiosk to print the image “as-is” without any auto-cropping or resizing. The layout is already sized correctly.
Option 2: Post Office
Post Office branches with photo services can print your passport photos. Some branches also offer the “Check and Send” service which reviews your entire application including photos.
- Bring your Kindro 4×6 layout on your phone or a USB drive
- Ask for a standard 4×6 glossy print
- Photo-quality prints available at most larger branches
- Cost varies by branch: typically £0.20–£0.50 for a 4×6 print
Option 3: Snappy Snaps
Snappy Snaps is a dedicated photo printing chain found on many UK high streets. They offer high-quality photo printing and can print your 4×6 layout on the spot.
- Bring the 4×6 layout file on your phone
- Professional-grade printing equipment
- Staff can assist with file transfer and print settings
- Cost: typically £0.30–£0.50 for a 4×6 print
Option 4: Tesco Photo
Tesco Photo offers online ordering with home delivery or in-store collection at Tesco stores. Upload your 4×6 layout online and collect your prints.
- Upload to tescophoto.com
- Order a 6×4 inch print
- Collect in-store or have it delivered
- Cost: from 9p per print online (plus delivery if applicable)
Option 5: Home Printer
If you have a photo-quality printer at home, you can print passport photos yourself:
- Download the 4×6 print layout from Kindro
- Load 4×6 inch glossy photo paper into your printer
- Set print quality to “Best” or “Photo” mode
- Print at actual size — do not “Fit to Page”
- Let the print dry completely before cutting
Note: Home printers vary in quality. Inkjet printers with photo paper produce good results, but the ink cost per print may be higher than Boots. If you’re printing for an important application, a professional print is safer.
Option 6: Online Print Services
Several online services deliver prints to your door:
- Photobox: Upload the 4×6 layout, order glossy prints, delivered in 2–5 days
- ASDA Photo: Online ordering with click-and-collect at ASDA stores
- FreePrints app: Free 4×6 prints (pay postage only)
- Amazon Photos: Print service with Prime delivery
Online printing typically costs 10p–30p per print plus delivery. Best for convenience when you’re not near a Boots or Post Office.
Cutting Your Photos
After printing the 4×6 layout, cut along the printed guides to get individual 35×45 mm photos:
- Use a paper cutter or sharp scissors with a straight edge
- Cut along the thin guide lines on the print
- Each photo should measure exactly 35×45 mm
- Avoid ragged edges — HMPO may reject torn or uneven photos
Common Printing Mistakes
- Auto-cropping: Kiosks sometimes auto-crop or resize. Insist on printing the image at its original size.
- Wrong paper size: The layout is designed for 4×6 inches. Printing on A4 paper will change the photo dimensions.
- Low-quality paper: Regular printer paper produces blurry, unprofessional results. Always use photo paper.
- “Fit to page” scaling: This shrinks or stretches the image. Always print at “Actual Size” or 100%.
- Wet ink: Let inkjet prints dry for at least 5 minutes before handling or cutting.
