U.S. Passport Photo Requirements (2026 Guide)
Photo Size and Dimensions
- Photo size: 2×2 inches (51×51 mm)
- Head height (chin to top of hair): 1 to 1-3/8 inches (25–35 mm)
- Eye height (bottom of photo to eyes): 1-1/8 to 1-3/8 inches (28–35 mm)
- Minimum resolution: 300 DPI (600×600 pixels)
Background Requirements
The background must be plain white or off-white. No patterns, textures, shadows, or other people/objects should be visible. If your background isn't perfect, Kindro's AI will automatically remove it and replace it with pure white.
Facial Expression and Pose
- Face the camera directly — no tilting or turning
- Keep a neutral expression or natural smile
- Both eyes must be open and clearly visible
- Do not squint or close your mouth unnaturally

- No hats or head coverings unless worn daily for religious purposes
- No headphones or wireless earbuds
- Avoid white clothing (blends with background)
- No uniforms (except religious attire)
Photo Quality
- Must be in color (no black and white)
- Taken within the last 6 months
- No filters, effects, or digital alterations to facial features
- Properly exposed — no overexposure, underexposure, or harsh shadows
- Printed on glossy or matte photo paper (for physical submissions)
Common Rejection Reasons

Infant and Child Passport Photos
Children and infants must meet the same photo requirements. Tips for photographing babies:
- Lay the infant on a white blanket or sheet
- Take the photo from directly above
- Make sure the eyes are open
- No other person should be visible in the photo
